Encounter II: The Hidden Hunger

Onion with diamond at centre

Seeker:
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I keep choosing what I know isn’t good—fast food, late nights, distractions. I know better. But I don’t do better.

Preacher:
You are not alone in this contradiction. Many know the path, but few walk it without stumbling.

Seeker:
But why? If I know what's right, why do I keep picking what harms me? It's like my own will is against me.

Preacher:
It is not always about will. Often, it is about what you give priority to—whether knowingly or not. Beneath your conscious thoughts are older loyalties, older wounds, and quieter cravings. These choose when you do not.

Seeker:
Are you saying my mind isn’t enough to change me?

Preacher:
The mind can know. But it is the heart that must believe, and the soul that must agree. Thought is a surface wave. Change is an ocean current.

Seeker:
So what do I do? Just accept that I’m not strong enough?

Preacher:
No. You must not beat yourself for where you are. You must become curious. Compassionate. Trace each choice to its root. Ask, “What is this really feeding in me?” Is it comfort? Familiarity? A defiance, perhaps?

Seeker:
Comfort. Maybe. I eat when I feel hollow. I distract myself when I feel overwhelmed.

Preacher:
Then your hunger is not for food. It is for peace. For safety. For something lost long ago. Unpeel the onion. Every layer is a story you once needed to survive. But now, you are allowed to change the ending.

Seeker:
That sounds... exhausting.

Preacher:
It is. But it is also liberating. To uncover the core of your being is not a punishment—it is a pilgrimage. At the centre of all your choices is a soul waiting to be seen, not shamed.

Seeker:
And what if I fail again?

Preacher:
You will. And then you will rise again. The work of becoming whole is not done in a day. But every act of gentle awareness is a victory. Every small honest look at yourself is a step forward.

Seeker:
So... I’m not broken?

Preacher:
You are not broken. You are becoming.

Thought is a surface wave. Change is an ocean current.
